The Impact of Coaching: Transforming Amazing Ideas Into Action
The impact of coaching is powerful—I’ve always had a lot of ideas for businesses, but it was always hard to overcome my fears. Although I knew I had great ideas, I felt like I never had what it took to start my own.
- There was that plant identification app back when PDA’s were first introduced.
- Then it was a service business where I would be your “wife.” No, not in that way. I would do your errands – pick up your dry cleaning, grocery shopping, keep the house clean, take the kids to their activities, and generally keep your life organized. Perfect for the dual working parents who can’t keep up with all the demands of life
- Then there was that grocery shopping app that would optimize visits across grocery stores based on preferences and deliver the best deals of the day.
For years, I never felt like I had what it took to start a business. I always thought of myself as a great support for the person who started the business. I took instruction well, got things done, contributed great ideas, and was a fast learner, but my identity was not as an entrepreneur.
For years, I led product teams that launched products into the marketplace successfully. I was financially rewarded for this, and I learned a lot.
While working successfully in this software busines I was presented with a problem in the home inspection space and I had another idea. At this point, the idea doesn’t matter, but I dove in head first and started the business. My years of training gave me the confidence I needed to succeed. If I only knew the impact of coaching earlier.

Getting Past Our Fears
Not everybody has an opportunity for training, and not everybody has the confidence necessary to take that leap. The impact of coaching can be life-changing in these moments. So what’s a person to do? That’s where a coach is a perfect solution. A coach can help you overcome your fear.
Maybe your problem isn’t starting a business but changing jobs or taking on a leadership position. Maybe it’s as simple as having the confidence to get over something you’ve been afraid of for years that is holding you back, like learning to drive.
We all have things we avoid because we are worried about negative outcomes, afraid to hurt people’s feelings, or don’t believe in ourselves. Maybe we tried it before and it didn’t work, so we assume that’ll happen again. Maybe you were holding on to some belief system from your childhood that is no longer true—like thinking you’re not smart enough because you didn’t do well in math in second grade.
That is where a coach is essential. The impact of coaching goes beyond motivation—it helps you understand what might be blocking you, find possible ways to reframe that issue in a more positive light, and create a step-by-step action plan to help you reach your goal.
For instance, if you’ve tried it before and it didn’t work, a coach can help you understand that it wasn’t a recipe for disaster but rather a learning opportunity. For more about that, read this post about a better way to perceive past mistakes.
This is just one example of a reframe that can turn an unconstructive thought into a more constructive one that generates action.
Where Judgment Fits In
One of the biggest blockers for people is judgment—either of themselves or others. The impact of coaching helps individuals recognize and shift these limiting beliefs. When judging ourselves, we put a very harsh lens on our own capabilities. I’m not smart enough, I’m not good enough, I’m not experienced enough. Then we start to put roadblocks in front of ourselves—I’ll do that when I have more time, more money, more experience, etc.—which inevitably will never happen. Learn more about alternatives to judgment that are more constructive here.
Because in the end, judgment only hurts oneself more than others. The impact of coaching can help you move from judgment to discernment, which is “to perceive by the sight or some other sense or by the intellect.” Discernment is great, but when it turns into judgment, it creates stress and blocks us from forward progress. Judgment takes discernment and decides right vs. wrong. In order to achieve your goals, you need to determine whether or not judgment is serving you—and if it is not, find a way through it.
How Coaching Helps Overcome Your Fears: The Impact of Coaching
The fact is, we are all walking around with some messy stuff. I’ve heard it called my insecurities, my who bag, my baggage, etc. It doesn’t matter what you call it, but it does matter that you have it—and that you are not alone. All this baggage makes it hard to overcome your fears. The impact of coaching is that it helps you recognize what’s in your bag, how it’s stopping you from achieving your goals, and how to reframe it in a way that empowers you to move forward. The trick is that the people who succeed in life are those who start to understand their mess, shift their mindset, and take action. And coaching is an ideal way to unpack that messy stuff, clean it up, and create a path toward achieving your wildest dreams.
As Sara Blakely from Spanx said,
Start now
Start where you are
Start with fear
Start with pain
Start with doubt
Start with shaking hands
Start with voice trembling
Just F*cking Start!
