Turn Job Loss to Opportunity with Your Own Business
By Toby Adamson
Losing your job can feel like a punch to the gut—but what if it’s actually a blessing in disguise? If you’re asking, “How to start a business with no job?” or wondering, “I’m out of a job—should I start my own business?”—this is your sign. Before you throw yourself back into the job-hunting frenzy, pause. This blog shares my real-life story, what I learned from being unemployed, and why job loss might just be the nudge you need to build something that’s finally yours (and maybe even better).
I Lost My Job—Now What Should I Do?
Vulnerability alert! When I lost my job, I went straight into crisis mode. Refreshing job boards like it was my part-time gig, reaching out to every old coworker, canceling all the fun non-essential things in my life, like my cleaning service—you know the drill. The last thing on my mind was starting a new business.
If you’re thinking, “I’m out of a job, what should I do now” or “I’m out of a job, should I start my own business?” you’re not alone. It’s a legit question, especially when the 9-to-5 grind didn’t exactly spark joy to begin with.
Here’s the twist: during one of those panic-fueled networking meetings, a former CEO offered to partner with me and help fund a business idea. And for the first time, instead of dread, I felt… excited. I said yes—and it changed everything.

Should I Start a Business?
If this question is keeping you up at night, it means your brain is working. You’re not broken—you’re brainstorming. Starting a business isn’t for everyone, but for some of us, it’s exactly the “plot twist” we needed.
When you’re out of a job, you finally have breathing room. No endless meetings, no soul-sucking reports, just you, your thoughts, and possibility. Your creativity gets a chance to come out and play. You don’t need a flawless plan—just a spark and a willingness to explore.
How Do I Know What Kind of Business to Start?
Great question and probably worthy of an entire blog post! But in the meantime, try this low-pressure brainstorm:
- What do people always ask you for help with?
- What do you rant about that secretly shows you care?
- What could you talk about for hours without sounding rehearsed?
Just start with something useful. And if you need help turning sparks into strategy, that’s where a coach can help. We can help you identify your strengths and passions, and help you turn that into a set of ideas to explore.
I want to start a business but don’t know where to start?
Why This Might Be the Best Time to Start Your Business
1. You’ve Got Time Allowing Creativity to Shine
No job = no endless Zooms or surprise meetings. You can finally think. It is no surprise that ideas come to you when you are in the shower, laying in bed, or meditating. Your brain needs space for creativity.
Why do we get our best ideas in the shower?
2. Severance or Savings = Breathing Room
Think of it as your unofficial investor (thanks, past employer!). Severance pay can provide a meaningful buffer to explore ideas without the financial worries of paying your next months housing cost.
3. You’ve Got Nothing to Lose
Let’s be honest—if you’ve already been let go, you’re free to try something wild and new. Maybe this was exactly what you needed but you didn’t know it?
4. A Side Gig Could Soften the Fall
Even if you go back to a job later, having your own thing on the side can reduce your anxiety about being laid off, making you more focused on just performing and keeping fear from running the show. I know from personal experience that stress can impact your decision-making.
The Fears Are Real (And You’re Not Alone)
Let’s not sugarcoat this part:
- Bills are real
- Impostor syndrome is loud
- Public failure is a total buzzkill
Every time I got laid off, I had my realtor on speed dial. I was ready to sell my house more than once—but I always figured it out. And here’s what I know: fear gets loudest right before something amazing happens.

Your Life Situation Doesn’t Disqualify You
Got kids? Me too. I started my business with an 11-year-old and a 15-year-old at home. Were things tight at first? Yep. But we became a team. They learned real-world skills, and I finally felt aligned. It wasn’t easy—but it was worth it. The winning strategy was to help them understand the difference between need and want – which is a tremendous life skill.

Takeaway: Turning Your Job Loss to Opportunity: This Might Be the Plot Twist You Needed
Instead of asking “Should I start a business?” try asking “What if this is the moment everything changes—for the better?”
Being out of work might not be the end. It might be your beginning. All you need is a little courage and a whole lot of curiosity.
